MORE ABOUT SUTTON ST JAMES

This gives some background to St James and the area.
Please also see the links on the left for more information.

We are situated in the village of Sutton Lane Ends, Cheshire, about 2 miles from Macclesfield (which is about 20 miles south of Manchester), and which is on the edge of the Peak district, with views of Macclesfield Forest and surrounding hills.

There has been an Anglican Church in the village of Sutton since 1840. The Victorian Church was built on land donated for the purpose, and in response to a number of generous donations from local people.

The Church was seen as an opportunity of outreach on behalf of the people of Macclesfield, and from the "Sutton" side of the town in particular.

The parish itself could be described as "balloon shaped", with the church itself being towards the neck of the balloon. The parish boundary more or less follows a line from the Old King's Head pub (not actually in the parish) to the Fool's Nook, then up to the Hanging Gate, across to the Leather's Smithy, then to the club-house on the golf course (again not actually in the parish) and thence back to the Old King's Head.

At present there are approximately 2,500 people living in the parish, and about 200 of them are on the church electoral roll.  Over the years the Church of Sutton St James has been constant in its message to bring the good news of Christ to the community.  Generally the style of worship has been joyfully traditional. Most Sundays there is a Prayer Book Holy Communion at 8.30am, a morning service at 10.30am and at 6.30pm a Sung Service of Evening Prayer.  There can be different types of services during the month, for example in the first Sunday of the month there is a Worship for All service at 10.30am (please click here for details of services).

There is a lively and thriving Young Church, the choir is in good voice, and the people of Sutton St James' enjoy very close fellowship with other denominations in the area, and in particular with the Methodist Church in Langley.

Historically the community was centred on farming and in later years forestry.  But these days there are fewer farms being worked as such, and more and more people are travelling to Macclesfield or further afield to find employment.  For many years the area was famous for the skills of the silk printers who lived and worked in the area.

The countryside surrounding Sutton is outstanding.  Many people visit the area to enjoy the numerous country walks that criss-cross the borough. The Gritstone Trail meanders through the area and the well appointed Teggs Nose Country Park is a firm favourite haunt of visitors and locals alike.

Sutton has a lively village shop and Post Office, a superb County Primary School (Holllnhey). There is also an excellent Pre-School Play Group directly associated with St James' Church. The community also boasts one of the most active and lively Scout and Guide Groups in the area.

If this is your first visit to the parish of Sutton St James', or you have lived here for many years, please do not hesitate to get in touch if the Church can ever be of help. The Church has faithfully served the community for the past 160 years.  Long may it continue to do so.....
